The name of Rome’s main international airport is Leonardo Da Vinci, but it is better known as Fiumicino. Its airport code is FCO and it is about 30km from the center of Rome.
There are several ways of reaching the center of Rome from the airport of Fiumicino:
By taxi:
A taxi from the airport to anywhere within the old Aurelian city walls costs 40 Euros. This is a fixed price, which means that it does not matter how many passengers there are or what time of day it is. There is no surcharge for luggage and it does not matter whether it is a normal weekday, a sunday or a holiday. From the city back to the airport the same rate applies. Be sure to go to the taxi stand outside the arrivals hall and do not accept rides from anyone who comes up to you with a bunch of keys, yelling “taxi”. There is an office at the airport proclaiming taxi rides for 60 Euros, but that is because they are based in Fiumicino itself and are not allowed to accept return fares.
By mini-van
There are several mini bus companies with offices in the airport itself. Their drivers tend to walk around and bring you to the offices, which makes everything look more official. The price should be 15 Euros per person, but they often try for 20. Insist, and might just save yourself some money! A disadvantage is that they can hold up to 8 people, so if there are 4 couples going to 4 different hotel in 4 different parts of town it might take a while for you to reach your destination.
By coach:
The SIT Shuttle bus company offers a direct ride to Roma Termini, the main railway station, for 8 Euros per person. Their stop is in the Via Marsala, near the side entrance to the station.
By train
The Leonardo Express is a direct train traveling non-stop between the airport and Termini. The duration of the trip is around 30 minutes and the price is at the moment 14 Euros. Tickets can be bought at tobacconists, newspaper stands, vending machines and even at ticket offices (but at Termini these are nowhere near track 25, where the Leonardo Express stops).
Slower, and cheaper, regional trains will take you from the airport to smaller Roman railway stations like Ostiense, Tiburtina, Trastevere and San Pietro. None of these are exactly central, but some can be quite handy if you are not staying directly in the center of town either. Stazione Trastevere, moreover, has an excellent connection to the heart of Rome, in tram n.8.
By car
Follow the directions to Roma centro and when you reach the G.R.A. follow the Via Cristoforo Colombo until you come to the center.
