This exhibition purports to shed light on the life and legends about the man who turned the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire: Julius Caesar.

Caesar himself claimed to be a diret descendant of the Goddess Venus and her son Aeneas, founder of the city of Rome.

With the aid of paintings, sculptures and other objects on loan from a number of European museums, the exhibition follows the development of the cult of Caesar, who was murdered in 44 B.C. It starts with Renaissance artists and arrives, via the times of Shakespeare, at the gladiator movies of the fifties.

A number of scale models, especially made for the exhibition, are also to be seen.

The exhibition, which lasts until April 5th 2009, takes place in the Chiostro del Bramante (Via della Pace).

Opening hours: from 10am until 8pm (until 9pm on fridays and saturdays). Mondays closed. Admission 10 Euros.

This exhibition, inside the Colosseum in Rome, highlights the efforts to protect Italy’s heritage of ancient culture and art.

Already in 1909 a law dealing with the problem of Italian art being sold abroad had come into effect.

More than sixty exhibits have been divided into six sections, starting from the times of Italy’s unification and ending with the most recent attempts to stop the sale of illegal art.

The works, often on loan from foreign museums and art galleries, are also meant to illustrate the various ways in which exchanges between galleries and museums have been encouraged.

The exhibition will last until February 15th, 2009. For more information call +39 (0)639967700.
